The Crossroads Cafe Deborah Smith 9780976876052 Books Reviews

While a part of me enjoyed reading this book, parts of me also cringed and I ended up being glad I recieved it as a free download. I thought it was going to be more about a woman's struggle to deal with her changed self than a romance novel.

The author is wonderful at painting her setting in your mind, and the characters are well developed. I even liked the story line, although it was a bit predictible, and the book keeps your interest. Where I had issue were in a couple places. First of all, I found the frequent political references and obvious left wing politics did not belong in the story nor did it add anything. While dealing with the issue of 9/11 political ramifications are bound to surface, but I just did not like the way it was handled in the book. It was like a romance novel trying to sneak in some political persuasion kind of as an afterthought.

Secondly, it was like the author could not decide whether to make references to God and be a Christian type romance, or whether to lean more towards erotica. The entire first half of the book was more one way and then towards the end, there was WAY too much information offered about the sex lives of the main characters that I feel comfortable with. I felt like the book didn't turn out quite as I expected in that way, but did not find the sex scenes all that sexy and hearing about their er......solo.... habits was just way too much. Ewwwww!

And finally the author really did not do her research in a few areas of country living. The main male character starts off the book sleeping in the back of his truck with an intact male goat. Anyone who has actually been around one of these would be laughing themselves silly, as the odor from one of them is incredibly, INCREDIBLY bad, and no one would want to be around this person, much less have him go right in and work in a kitchen! But in the end of the book you find out his goat gets its own "harem" so everything works out just-so-perfect, even the goat and the rooster get layed.
I read this book again after about four years. Have to admit that there's a lot I had forgotten about this book so I had the pleasure of reading again the forgotten parts.
I Know that the author Deborah Smith is mainly a women's writer, but I really liked telling the story from Thomas view point and Cathryn's view point. I have to admit that I really enjoyed the telling about life and vistas of the North Carolina Mountains. My wife and I took most of our vacations in the N.C and Ga. mountains. I can't see very well now and read on a large print.
Now Biscuits that my mother and mother in law made for found memories.

It did seem like tragedy after hardship occurred.
This is written by a seventy-six year old man so I'm just happy in the way Smith included a man in the story. Just maybe she will write another story about a good man that is faithful to his wife.
Like the biscuits in the book, this story overflows with delicious, buttery warmth. It captivates from page one and doesn't stop until the end. And, I must confess, I am still teary eyed as I write this, based on one of the most decriptive and moving passages I have read in years. No spoilers here ~ I'll just say, there is joy and sadness but the feelings are cathartic.

The author has created complex characters whose lives mesh in the most surprising ways. There is the famous Hollywood actress, Cathryn Deen, reknowned for her exquisite beauty, who is thrown into a world she's not prepared for, after an auto accident leaves her seriously burned. Thomas Mitternich is a hero of 9/11 who lost his wife and son on that horrific historical day. Four years later, he has yet to come to grips with his tragedy.

Fate has a hand in their meeting, though, and what transpires from then on, is prose so eloquently written one will want to read it again and again. Interspersed throughout are quotes from famous people that I think vividly connects the theme of what it means to be truly beautiful. If one's soul is pure and innocent, is that not more magnificent than a perfect body without flaws? Are flaws not, in fact, what makes the contrast so striking and more significant? The basic stuff of Life, when stripped of all inconsequential things, comes down to love.

The Crossroads Café, in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina, owned and run by Cathy's Cousin Delta is the hub of a small, fiercly protective community that becomes instrumental in Cathy's salvation. Famous for its Southern Cooking, people travel from all over the country to experience Delta's home spun philosophy. Toss in unusual pets, mix with two amazing children looking for permanence, a workforce of women laborers and you have a cast of characters that can't be beat.

Don't miss reading this astonishing book ~ you'll be so glad you did! This was my first Deborah Smith novel. It won't be my last!
