Beyond the borders of the mighty Kalharian Empire, the Tribes of Gurdur wander a vast plain. When the border falls under dispute and his tribe prepares for war, Ezekiel is left behind to train with his mysterious uncle. There he learns the art of necromancy, and begins to wonder If a man can be brought back to life, why not a civilization?

An Exercise in Futility follows Ezekiel, a young man from a nomadic tribal society (Gurdur) who has a slightly bum leg. It is not enough to cripple him, but its enough to limit his effectiveness with standard melee weapons in their traditional society. When the Kalharian Empire decides that its time to expand their borders and civilize the Gurdur Tribes Ezekiel is sent to train with his hermit uncle. Upon arriving at his uncles camp he finds another student and learns that they are to study magic. His uncle Joseph teaches them the basics until they learn what school they are to specialize in. Ezekiel will be a necromancer and begins training with an elf friend of his uncle named Kianel. Kianel teaches him the basics of necromancy and eventually they make their way to join their people to fight.

I really enjoyed the beginning of the book, but thought is slowed down a bit at the end. I would still recommend the book to anyone who is a fan of fantasy books that involve nomadic tribes.

An Exercise in Futility Steve Thomas 9781452874166 Books Reviews

Creative, and enjoyable the whole way through. Some cool things done here. It's also nice to read a fantasy novel that isn't 700+ pages for once. Looking forward to reading his next book.
An Exercise in Futility was an enjoyable read, and I heartily recommend it. I gave it 4 stars, because it takes a little while for it to get going, but overall it is an interesting read with a deep engaging mythology (which I hope will be expanded upon in later additional books).

This book delves into themes like the expansion of civilization, mortality, and idealism. Is progress good or evil? Are traditions worth dying for? When change seems inevitable, do you accept it or go out in a fight? Is the death of an idea like the death of the body?

At the end, you may be surprised at who you end up liking the most.
An Exercise in Futility

I was completely and fully blown away. I was not expecting much when I first started this novel as the beginning felt like history class but then before I new it I was on the most amazing trek through the most amazing world and I have this author to thank. If you can stomach a little dry history to get to the juicy details then this novel is sure to please. One last word for the Author, when and where can I get more.
It was a bit slow at first, while discussing the history of Kalharia. The history was well-crafted, but had a tendency to slip into a somewhat dry textbook style of presentation. However, once I came to the Gurdur legend and the main story got going, I found it to be a very engaging piece of work. The unintentionally awkward points in the early dialogue are redeemed by the fascinating storyline, including a plot twist that wasn't entirely unforeshadowed, but did throw me for a bit of a loop. In addition to the captivating plot, the author delivers subtle humour in the most perfect places.

More than just simple light reading, the book makes some poignant remarks about human interaction accepting unnecessarily negative situations with an attitude of "at least it isn't any worse," manipulating people by forcing their reliance on leadership, the delicate issue of the humanity of "the enemy" in war, fighting for traditions versus embracing progress, and more. I think it was an excellent first book and I look forward to reading more from this author.
An interesting idea, writing the book from the viewpoint of a dying civilization. I thought some of the characters were very well-written and I particulary liked the descent into the underworld. That was a very interesting mythology and I loved the story development at this point. I felt that he story seemed to be trying to incorporate too many different kinds of fantasy genre; including a sword and sorcery, dwarves and elves, and even biblical references, and it felt muddled as a result of this. I did enjoy the characters and the historical aspect of the events that I would like to read more about these different cultures in the future.
Here's the product description "Beyond the borders of the mighty Kalharian Empire, the Tribes of Gurdur wander a vast plain. And if you are a veteran fantasy reader here's what you'd expect- our Hero, who is tall dark and handsome, masters the art of wizardry to save his people from the Evil Empire.

But you wouldn't get that. Our Hero is a cripple and he's not tall or particularly handsome. Yes, he does master necromancy- but in a very unusual way. He's also a very unusual hero. And, the book comes to a very unusual end. More would spoil it.

Starts a little slow, but then takes off- then it takes some very unusual turns. Also, it's rather short.

If you're bored with the "same-old, same-old" in fantasy, then give this new author a try.

I rcvd a copy for review.
Steve's imagination is quite vivid and very original while not being impenetrable. Most of the laws his books use are pretty simple and easy to remember, so for those who aren't necessarily fans of fantasy, the book should pose no problems to your delicate sensibilities. The fantastic elements also aren't just pointless paranormal drek, as they are in a lot of, what passes for, modern fantasies.

An Exercise in Futility also does well to avoid romance at all, a plague which has crippled the fantasy genre and poses a threat to the sanctity of Science Fiction as well. In this respect, Steve is a gallant Vian Knight, fighting the tyranny of bad taste.
