I read this when it was first published and still have my ragged paperback on the shelf with all Hambly’s other books. Her descriptions are layered and fascinating, her plots have more twists than a theme park ride and her characters are the people you would most like to meet in person.
Please be advised, these are not books to skim if you want to really get into them. Sun Wolf is a complex character as is Starhawk. There are two more books with these characters, and they are even more enjoyable. I have read and reread these books and they never get old, although I have to say that they get even better than Ladies of Mandrigan.

I am not a reading snob, my primary requirement is that a book keeps me engaged and turning the pages. This one did that for me. It is outside my normal sci-fi wheelhouse but was an enjoyable read.
Barbara Hambly writes medieval fantasy better than any other author. Her background in history produces a realism that leaves the reader uncertain where the "reality" leaves off and the fantasy begins. But don't read this series for the realistic siege campaigns or brutalities of mercenary life, read it for Sun Wolf and Starhawk a pair of unlikely hero's who are more well rounded and interesting than most "real" people. My favorite of the many outstanding series by Ms. Hambly.

I only just recently "discovered" Barbara Hambly, when a friend loaned me "Dragonsbane". Where has Hambly been all my life??!! After reading "Dragonsbane" I went looking for more, and I am absolutely delighted to have found "The Ladies of Mandrigyn".

This is an absolutely riveting tale, with a striking couple at its center. As with "Dragonsbane", some ingredients of the mix cause it to masquerade as cheap fantasy thriller fiction (the central characters are named Sun Wolf and Star Hawk, for instance...) But the depth and realism of the characterisations, and the complexity of the story as it unfolds, soon set the book apart from - far above - the average.

Hambly starts the book in the center of a mercenary warrior band, with Sun Wolf as the chief. The mercenaries are a convincing welter of characters, and the absolute ascendancy of the chief is clear. But as the story unfolds, we gradually get snippets of Sun Wolf's childhood with a bullying father, and his hidden artistic and mystical leanings. These are revealed without lessening his warrior status.

Likewise, his second in command slowly gains more depth and detail. From the original sketch of a woman who has built a reputation for deadliness and taciturnity, she develops into an internally vulnerable, highly intelligent woman, an ex-nun with a meditation habit, and the ability to put honesty before comfort.

Hambly's story of a group of women in an occupied city, sent to hire a mercenary band to liberate their people, and their interaction with the mercenaries soon turns into a twisty tale of human motivations and conflicts. Her delicate treatment of the clash of different cultures and beliefs reminds me of the work of Orson Scott Card (this is high praise). In particular, the ultimate surprise ending (and there is definitely more than one surprise at the ending), while it completely blind-sides the reader, rings absolutely true! The magic which winds through the story is almost an unnecessary frill, though a very nice one, and again, convincingly done.

While this is fun fiction rather than deathless prose, it is definitely a thought-provoking work. But it delivers those thoughts in a compulsive page-turner full of action and excitement. Just the way I like it.
I've read this title several times. It's earthy in it's treatment of pain and fighting. I like the characters. I love the action. What do you do in a world of magic when almost no one can cast spells. What do you do when you have to train a new crop of fighters after the army has lost and enslaved. Sunwolf, a mercenary captain has to come up with these and other problems. Enjoy it.
I read this years ago and really enjoyed it, so it was great to run across it again. It best fits into a swords and sorcery genre, but there is also a bit of romantic development. The characters are interesting and well developed and the world building is fascinating. Even side characters and small side plots are well done. Of course, this has been true of all of Barbara Hambly's novels. I don't know how many times I've reread the Darwath series.
This book was my first try at the fantasy genre and i was pleasantly surprised. Being a military veteran, I enjoyed Barbara's description of training and tactics to accomplish Sheera and Sunwolf's mission. It seems somewhere along the line she got some immersion into how soldiers live, train and fight and was able to transfer that to the page. Ms. Hambly has excellent ability to paint vivid descriptions of the environment. The physical and emotional trials of the warrior trainees left me with a feeling of being there, exhausted by the effort required to do the tasks. Being a novice fantasy reader, she didn't take me too far afield into wizardry but just enough to make it interesting and surprisingly believable. I recommend this book to anyone interested in military fiction looking for some unique twists without too much woohoo.
