I have to agree with other reviewers that felt this second book of this trilogy is not necessary to enjoy the first and third. There is a large portion of the first part of the book that is very Christian themed. The last half of the book felt more like a Sherlock Holmes mystery, castle and all. Darcy=Sherlock and his valet Fletcher=Watson were an unlikely team due to their differences in position. I gave it three stars for entertainment value.
I would have preferred to read more of Darcy's thoughts and introspection. These events would certainly have affected his feelings and opinions of himself and others, especially where Elizabeth was concerned. While I will be reading the third book again, this may occur at that point-I can't recall. (I have read the first and third books some time ago). I don't feel this second book is worth the hefty price tag.

Wonderful insight into the character of Mr. Darcy and his lifestyle. Illuminates the wide gulf between his and Elizabeth's social standing in society. We learn about the heavy responsibilities he inherited at a young age when his beloved parents died and his deep sense of duty and devotion as the guardian of his much younger sister. He feels intense concern over her experience with Mr. Wickam and personal guilt that she wasn't better protected. His intense hatred of the villain is unrelenting. Throughout, he wrestles with his secret love for Elizabeth. He is a man of strong passions which he strongly restrains in accordance with public conventions. The character of Fletcher, his valet, continues to add delightful humor. Fletcher is the only person to recognize a young man in love. The plot contains a conventional, melodramatic conclusion to a country house party, but as Mr. Darcy returns to London, continuing to think of what a life with Elizabeth would be like, I couldn't wait to read the next volume.
This the second of three novels that allows the reader to learn about the other side of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, written from Darcy's POV.

Please read Pamela Aidan's three books in the proper sequence.

The writing is captivating and I could almost imagine Austen writing this if she had had the time. Darcy's life in the period of time taken to "live" behind the details of Pride and Prejudice is full of surprising action and invites us to get to know the real Darcy. It reveals how Darcy comes to make the huge leap into self knowledge that is needed for him to forsake the pride that has governed and, indeed, almost ruined his life from his first schoolroom days as his father's son. I love Darcy even more than I ever did. Austen lovers do not miss this trilogy. I can imagine reading this trilogy again right after my next reading of Pride and Prejudice (an almost annual gift to myself...)
Bought this book after reading the excellent "An assembly such as this" thinking it would continue the story. Instead this weird book goes completely off the reservation. It dwells on religion a lot and the first two thirds of the book could have been compressed into a few pages. The prose is unnecessarily twisty and wordy. The last third turns into a mediocre whodunit with even less relation to the story line. I am left scratching my head. I will buy the last book though, since it appears to have a much better rating...
I held back for awhile on spending the money for this trilogy since it's a total outlay of about $30, especially since I had an idea that Volume II in particular strayed from the original story. I finally took the plunge, though, bought all 3 and read them. Although Volume II WAS a little strange (reminded me more of Mansfield Park than P&P), it DOES help explain to anybody who might have been wondering why Darcy would not look beyond BOTH Eliza Bennett AND Carolyn Bingley (and the London whirl she appears to represent) for the wife he must presumably find, highlighting the reality that even in an array of dazzling women who are Darcy's counterpart or better in so many ways there is no such thing as the perfect wife, as well as highlighting pitfalls that could be attendant on such a search and WHY he might not want to repeat such an experience. In terms of pure enjoyment, though, Volumes I and III had it all over Volume II for me. I suppose I'll never know how much I would have enjoyed Volumes I & III if I HADN'T read Volume II. I probably would have liked them just fine. But of course one would have missed part of the story and it was nice not to have missed any of it. From a P&P as well as a general JA fan (I have read all her works that were published 1813-1818, most of them more than once and P&P MANY times) I can say that I found this trilogy to be a most enjoyable and far better than average read. Excellent fleshing out of familiar characters & introduction of new. Thought Georgiana had awesome input and absolutely LOVED having the Scarlet Pimpernel thrown in!!
